Emotional Intelligence and You!

In difficult times, have you ever wondered why some people remain calm and say the “right” thing -- or nothing at all?  And maybe why you don’t!!  Join the majority of us who struggle to maintain our composure in emotionally charged situations.  The myth of count to 10 when you are challenged by a colleague or superior is a self-management strategy, and we will show the brain connection that indicates it is true!

The program introduces you to the fascinating saga of Phineas Gage, a railroad foreman, whose accident and subsequent limited recovery, was one of the first documented cases of what later became known as a loss of Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand yourself and others, monitor your and others’ feelings, use the information to guide your thinking and actions, control your emotions in stressful situations, and maintain positive relationships with others.  People with strong EI tend to rise in companies because they understand and get along with others.  You will have the opportunity to take a short EI questionnaire and assess your strengths and areas for growth.  Suggested resources for further investigation will be provided.

Emotional intelligence was popularized by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ.  His book was based on the work of two psychologists, John Mayer, PhD, and Peter Salovey, PhD.  Since the publication of Goleman’s book, further research and publications have expanded the boundaries of EI, which we introduce in the program.

With 90% of top performers high in EI, and EI [being] twice as important as IQ in getting where you want to go in life, who can afford to ignore EI?  Bradberry and Greaves (2009)

Course Objectives are to increase your ability to:

  • Recognize your own personal and social awareness skills and better manage yourself and your relationships with others, resulting from the results of your EI assessment.
  • Recognize when your emotions are hijacking your behavior and intervene
  • Manage your emotions by recognizing how thoughts and emotions are connected.
  • Improve your self-control by identifying physical cues that indicate your emotions may be taking over.
  • Discover how emotional intelligence can help you develop more positive relationships at work and a more optimistic outlook.
  • Interact with others and have fun!
